How to Package Products Safely for Online Orders
In the world of online selling, your job isn't done when a customer clicks "buy." The crucial final step is ensuring your product arrives at their doorstep safely. Safe packaging isn't just a logistical requirement; it is your best defense against negative reviews and costly return requests. A damaged delivery shatters customer trust and directly impacts your profit margin.
Here is a comprehensive guide to packaging your products safely for online orders.
1. Right-Size Your Shipping Box The foundation of a safe delivery is choosing a container that fits. An over-sized box increases shipping costs (due to dimensional weight) and gives your product too much room to move. Use sturdy, new, double-walled corrugated boxes for maximum strength. Your ideal box should leave just enough internal space for cushioning without crushing the item.
2. Use Adequate Void Fill (Cushioning) Never leave empty space inside your package. Movement causes items to bounce, clash, and ultimately break. Fill all remaining space with an effective void fill. Bubble wrap, crumpled kraft paper, and biodegradable packing peanuts are excellent choices. A good rule of thumb is that if you shake the package gently, you shouldn't hear anything rattle.
3. Wrap Individual Items Securely If you are shipping multiple items in one box, they should never touch. Wrap every single item individually—especially if they are breakable, like glass bottles or ceramic items. When packing liquids, seal the bottles with tape or wrap them in a waterproof plastic sleeve before bubble wrapping to prevent a disastrous leak from ruining the entire shipment.
4. Seal with Reinforced Packing Tape The final step is sealing the deal, and regular Scotch tape won't cut it. Use a strong, pressure-sensitive packing tape. Consider a reinforced water-activated tape for heavy shipments. Apply tape not just on the main seam, but along all the edges of the box flaps to ensure it stays locked shut against environmental stress.
